Being a Good Mentor
7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, 8 and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. (ESV) Titus 2:7-8
Mentoring is helping someone to open their eyes and to see God at work. It could be a position in the church, or it may be with us starting a new job. It is easier to have someone show us the ropes than to hear the words, 'We don't do it that way'.
We all need to be mentored. Without it we would be trying to learn something new by trial and error. Most likely, we would become discouraged and will be giving up. It is a common practice that when we start a new job, that we would have to go through a period of learning the ropes from someone else. This is to ensure that we will be doing it the right way and not cost our employer more money for doing things incorrectly.
As we continue to look at Elisha in II Kings 6:16-17: we see that the servant had a need for information. He had no clue of what was going to happen. He still needed to be mentored. He needed some information, for he was getting to the point of it becoming a crisis. He asked Elisha for he was terrified. Just knowing that someone is there to help us to get through the situation will help us calm down. Sometimes we need our eyes opened to see the bigger picture and how our Lord will use it to His advantage. This is why he prayed that his servant's eyes may be opened and calm down his fears.
A good way to look at mentoring is the idea of looking at how we raise our children. They are in need of information and how to go about doing what is right. If we do not communicate with them, then they will be terrified, not knowing what to do to please us. We need to offer them guidance and how to go about doing what is right. It is a learning process for them and us!
We have all heard the saying, 'Watch one, Do one, Teach one. When we learn how to do it properly, then we need to turn around and try to do it ourselves. Once we have mastered in doing it properly, we need to find someone else to teach them how to do it.
